Several sources have since suggested the cast list that sparked the brouhaha was a fabrication and Marvel has stated that Norrin Radd is absolutely, positively, definitely  not making an appearance in the film adaptation of a comic in which he figured centrally and prominently. So…probably not? The Surfer has previous appeared on the big screen as portrayed by Doug Jones in  The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. He was pretty much the  only good thing about that travesty. Though my saying Rise of the Silver Surfer  was a travesty isnt really fair because Im not sure I watched that…whatever-it-was the one time I actually watched it (yes, thats exactly what I meant). Which is a shame because the Surfer is an erudite, intelligent dude with a shiny (and very 60s) means of cosmic transport whos had a hand in several of the Marvel Comic universes Giant Cosmic Stories. Longing for adventure, Radd volunteered to meet an unknown space craft approaching his planet; unfortunately for him, the invader was Galactus, who intended to consume Zenn-La. The Things girlfriend, Alicia Masters, found the humanity buried within and reminded the Surfer he hadnt always been a Herald of Galactus, at which point Radd joined the Fantastic Four in defending earth from the Devourer of Worlds. Radd had a pretty crappy several decades of it thereafter, wandering Earth, trying to find a place to belong, and fighting Galactuss attempts to enslave him once more. He has some fun battling the Fantastic Fours rogues gallery alongside them until, under the influence of Psycho-Man, he ended up at odds with Spider-Man and other heroes. Good news though! Doctor Doom stole Radds powers (because of course he did) and when Radd got them back (because of course he did), he was free of influence and a hero once more. It was then he joined the Hulk, Namor, and Doctor Strange as a member of the original Defenders. He also went on some solo outings and assisted other teams (notably turning down an Avengers membership), defeating enemies both planet-bound and cosmic. During his intergalactic travels, the Surfer gets pulled through a wormhole (one I can only assume was not originally  called The Devils Anus)  and deposited on Sakaar (of  Thor: Ragnarok fame). Weakened by the passage, the denizens of said planet are able to capture Radd, despite many of them believing he is a messiah, and control him by way of obedience disks (sound familiar?), pitting him against none other than the Hulk. Hulk wins their first gladiatorial confrontation but the Surfers obedience disk is destroyed, allowing him to free both himself and the other slaves on Sakaar. After becoming the Herald of Galactus once more, Radd returns to Sakaar, of a mind to feed it to his master. Galactus eats the energy from the Hulks baby mama instead and then theres a lot of confusing time travel stuff, alternative universes, and Beta Ray Bill (alternate Thor with a dinosaur head. Hes fabulous and also one of the featured busts on the Grandmasters tower in  Ragnarok). Also,  Cosmo the tal king Russian dog. During the Infinity War, Radd is one of the cosmic beings who, alongside the Avengers, the X-Men, and pretty much every other good guy in the Marvel Universe, stands against Thanos. It is, in fact, Silver Surfer who first warns Doctor Strange of the danger they will all be forced from confront (you may recognize these panels from the nod theyve been given in the trailer, but with Bruce Banner as the one who comes crashing into the Sanctum: In all, a pretty rad (hehehe) character who definitely deserves his due in the MCU. Until he gets it, though, books! Fantastic Four Epic Collection (Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) Contained herein are issues #33â€"51 of  The Fantastic Four,  so if you want to catch the Surfers very first appearance in the three issue Coming of Galactus arc (#48â€"50) and you dont want to go foraging for the original prints, this is a good place to find it. I dont love the early FF stuff because, despite knowing it was the 60s and culture was different and institutional sexism was rampant, I want to tie Reed to spiky things every time he calls Sue little woman or complains dinner isnt on the table…but, alas, we must suffer it if we want to see the advent of much cooler characters such as Medusa, Black Bolt, and Radd. Silver Surfer Omnibus Vol. 1 (Stan Lee, John Buschema, and Jack Kirby) This collection, reprinted with restored artwork, was published in 2007 and collects  Silver Surfer 1â€"18 along with essays about the character and illustrations. Silver Surfer #1 was originally released in 1968, so, again, a bit dated. Brace yourself. Defenders Masterworks Vol. 1   (Steve Englehart, Roy Thomas, Ross Andru, Sal Buscema, and Neal Adams) Though modern readers know  the  Defenders  as a team composed of Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Matt Murdock, and Danny Rand, misfits of the small-screen MCU, the original lineup was an entirely other sort of weird: Doctor Strange, Namor the Sub-Mariner, the Hulk, and the Silver Surfer, soon joined by Valkyrie. Because their initial outings were spread over several different books (Sub-Mariner  #34â€"35 from 1968,  Doctor Strange,  Marvel Feature #1â€"3 from 1971, and finally, in 1972,  Defenders), its much simpler, and cheaper, to grab an omnibus collection. This group of Defenders is a lot of fun, mostly because Namor is a complete tool,  but also because they go to war with the Avengers which could be interesting source material for a future film should the Fox/Disney merger go through. Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War (Jim Starlin and Ron Lim) I covered these books in depth here so I wont bore you with another synopsis. The Surfers presence and central role in these two arcs, however, is why a bunch of us got really  excited when the casting rumor was circulating and were actually bummed out when it proved false. It would have been nice to have the Surfer present to link the Earth-centric MCU with the cosmic level MCU; Radd has always been a part of that bridge and it would have been a sweet nod to the history of the epic event to have the Surfer make an appearance, even if it was just a moment in a stinger. These books really dig into the Surfers character and history, into his motivations for protecting a planet not his own, and his inclusion brought a depth to the story that would have otherwise been completely subsumed by punching and explosions, which, while entertaining, isnt nearly as impactful. Silver Surfer VOl. 4 and Silver Surfer Vol. 5  (Dan Slott and Mike Allred) The Surfers most recent appearance (2016â€"2017) finds him accompanied on his travels by a human woman named Dawn Greenwood. Shenanigans ensue that put Radd once more at odds with the Avengers, land the couple in a space casino that puts Canto Bight to shame, and have them fighting to survive in the gullet of a macro-creature and, once more, in Galactuss sites. The 14-issue run was a celebration of the Surfers 50th birthday flying solo and it has a little bit of everything: romance, old grudges, action, adventure, and, of course, that most logical of all space transports: the surfboard. Strikes were common place in the early 1930†³s in all industrial and manufacturing corporations. They were used to win power away from the corporate giants, and put it in the hands of the working class. Labor used strikes for a variety of reasons, some for higher wages, some for working conditions, some for safety on the job, and still others for recognition. Korth and Margaret R. Beegle compile an oral history account of this fight for the rights of the working class. The Electric Auto-Lite Company was a part of the automotive assembly industry. It used mainly unskilled workers to operate the machinery, and the machinery was that There were two separate strikes at Auto-Lite. The first was used to orce the company into recognizing the union; that was the first step towards collective bargaining†¦ recognition. It stared on February 23, lasted only four days, and resulted in the reinstatement of the 15 workers who walked out, and an agreement. The workers won the battle but that was a long way from winning the war. Auto-Lite gave the union a 30-day contract, which basically stated the company would recognize the union for thirty days, but even in that thirty days the company refused to recognize the union as a bargaining representative of the workers. When this thirty ays reached its conclusion, the union was no better off then when it started. In fact in those thirty days the company was preparing itself for a strike. They started mass hiring new workers, so they could keep running the company if the labor walked out. The second strike began on April 13, and consisted of some 400 Auto-Lite workers. The strike seemingly divided the work force equally, as many went in as picketed. Then on May 3, a court injunction restricted the number of picketers at one time to a minuscule twenty-five. This rallied the surrounding men and women in the area to unite and break this injunction hat limited all of their freedom. On May 21, 22, and 23 more then 6,000 men and women united in front of Auto-Lite to hear speakers and to protest the company, along with protesting the court injunction. This is when the real trouble started for the company and the picketers. On May 23, A young women by the name of Alma Hand was stuck by a steel bracket which caused a riot among the crowd, and which initiated a raid on the building. The deputies fired tear gas at the would be invaders to stop them from storming the facility. That night a raging crowd refused to allow the scabs off the premises. After this episode, the Ohio National Guard was called in to restore the peace. These guardsmen only worsened the situation. On the next day, May 24, they charged the crowd wounding 12, then firing their rifles and killing one, then later that same day, they fired once again wounding two more picketers. By the 26th of May, with demands that the plant be closed and the Guard withdraw, another tragic confrontation occurred. The crowd attacked the Guard, 200 were injured and 50 were arrested. The plant remained closed for the following week and did not reopen until June 5. At this point, the strikers had emerged victorious. After all the hardships, injuries, and deaths, the union had been established and recognized. This was a shallow victory at first due to a number of circumstances. First of all, the old workers who remained at work throughout the strike had preference during the rehiring process. Secondly, betrayers who associated themselves with management formed their own bargaining organization called the Auto-Lite Council. This organization acquired for them preference in rehiring. The Auto-Lite Council soon diminished in numbers, while Local 18384 was increasing dramatically. This was due to the realization that the strikers were the ones who had won them collective bargaining, not the Auto-Lite Council. Therefore, their loyalties lied with the organization that had created the situation in which they had more power, respect, and The Auto-Lite strike is a perfect example of how the labor movement has advanced. The first strike only involved a mediocre 15 men. The second strike reached out to about 50% of the work force. The men and women of Auto-Lite had embraced their union and made it their own. This represents the labor movement because at the start only about million workers were unionized. At the pinnacle of the movement nearly 50% of the work force was organized, the number was in excess of 10 million individuals. Workers saw how the union could help them. They saw solidarity and unity, which when combined produced a force to be reckoned with. The union provided for higher wages, more benefits, and better working conditions. This idea is what attracted more members and this belief is what united the men and women at Auto-Lite. The strike also represents the risks and hardships accepted by the organizers who take on the challenge of forming a union. The 15 who went out in the first Auto-Lite strike took the chance of losing their jobs and hampering their families welfare to form a union just to help every worker in the plant. The men also accepted that they were going to lose their jobs and would have to fight for reinstatement. But all the risks taken, and all the brief hardships felt were well worth it considering the ends. Their union was recognized. Not to the extent they wished, but nonetheless they won recognition, which catapulted them to eventual complete victory. This result was not always the case. In some strikes the union failed nd the workers lost big. To the credit of the workers, their supporters, and their organizers the men and women of Auto-Lite were triumphant and won the fight of all fights; to gain respect, power, and recognition. This event was the turning point in labor relations in the city of Toledo. It gave confindence and self worth to the working class, and stripped the company management of their unimpeded omnipotence. Commodity chain analyses allow modern day geographers to understand the process in which a resource is gathered, transformed, and distributed as a commodity to consumers. This understanding is critical in the defetishization of commodities and the appreciation of the relationships of those that have created them. Commodity chain analyses are also fundamental in showing the inseparable role of geography within these processes of commodity production. Since then, the banana has remained popular worldwide but has faced its share of problems. Between 1993-2001, there were disputes between America and the European Union (EU) due to a complex problem involving banana licensing. The stages of production, transportation and consumption all create a complex and important story to the most consumed fruit worldwide because its history intertwines with political and social trends. Production Although bananas are produced in more than 123 countries worldwide, the bulk of banana production is concentrated to ten countries that account for 63% of the total; half of these countries harvest bananas as a locally produced staple for domestic use, but the other half produce them majorly as an  export crop. Tables 2.1 and 2.2 show the contrast between the countries producing, and the countries consuming bananas. The contrasting percentages of exported bananas is also an fascinating portion of these tables, for example, India is by far the leading producer, but does not export any of their crop. Taken together, the tables and the map of banana production creates an image that makes it easy to see that the global south is the main producer of the banana, but do not have an equal representation when it comes to consumption.4 This global difference between the north and south is not a new idea to geographers as it highlights the inequalities of these two areas. The actual production of the banana is a very involved process. James Wiley points this out by arguing that â€Å"it is virtually impossible for independent farmers, operating alone, to exercise sufficient control to ensure the eventual timely delivery to the global fruit market.† This is how he argues the â€Å"Banana Empire† was created, and for this reason it is easy to see how globalization fits perfectly with the banana trade.5 A typical plantation features miles of irrigation ditches and overhead pulley systems to carry fruit from plant to packing with minimum bruising. Packing sheds have also been technologically advanced to allow bananas to ripen during transport rather than prior, to create a longer shelf life. Additionally, labour has always been a great challenge to the banana empire. Historically, the workforce began to realize the violations of their rights around the time of the great depression in the United States. The popularization of unionization was common and many labourers challenged the empire to create a union for the workers worldwide. The workers of the banana industry average the age of fifty-five, and the workforce is predominantly dominated my men, meaning that they have lives and families to support which adds to the severity of the labour issue. By 1993, the Banana Empire ceased to exist due to Panama Disease, ongoing labour issues, the rise of new competition and the increased assertiveness of host country governments all contributed to the growing intricacy of the industry. Nowadays, the modern banana farmer has been exposed to many pesticides, which have led to adverse health conditions for the majority of workers but working conditions and wages are on the rise currently. The introduction of fair trade bananas in 2004 was fundamental in bettering the working conditions for farmers and labourers. Chiquita, the oldest banana transnational in Latin America was the primary  target of banana worker rights and environmental activists until 2001. The company has since teamed up with the Rainforest Alliance to roll out the Alliance’s standards to its banana farms in Latin America. 6 Chiquita prides itself on its recent changes, which have involved revamping the company to promote â€Å"The Chiquita Difference†; this includes a philosophy of social responsibility, sustainability, community involvement and food safety.7 These changes arose from the use of political activism by consumers in response to poor workers rights, thus exemplifying the fact that people do realize where their food is coming from and are willing to fight for those who create it. This shows that the process of defetishization has begun for many. Production overall is the most elaborate portion of the banana chain, and involves the most amount of physical labour. Transportation The transportation of bananas is essential to the entire commodity chain; bananas are picked while they are still green and are given time to ripen in the stores so that they have a longer shelf life, the use of pesticides and hormones to slow this process has been very controversial. For example, a Swedish documentary entitled â€Å"Bananas!† highlighted the sterilization of banana workers due to pesticides used by Dole, the second largest banana transnational. Dole attempted a lawsuit against the filmmakers, but later decided that it was in their best interests to drop the allegations. Dole’s vice president of the time released a statement that would attempt to create peace on the issue, While the filmmakers continue to show a film that is fundamentally flawed and contains many false statements, we look forward to an open discussion with the filmmakers regarding the content of the film.†8 These types of claims are not uncommon in the banana trade industry. The fair trade movement came about around 1993 and because of the resistance to fair trade these times are known as the â€Å"banana wars.† These wars have played a major role in the transportation and marketing of bananas in our modern age. The repercussions from the eight-year stand off between the EU and the USA over banana trade were not only felt by the banana industry, but the entire trade business worldwide. 9 The creation of the WTO in 1995 was crucial in solving the major economic disputes caused by large multinational stakeholders in the Southern Hemisphere. The influence of these corporations has been vital, but for the most part detrimental, in the local economic  situations in the south. For example, in February 1996, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and the United States filed a legal complaint against the European Union’s banana import regime, which had been in force since July 1993, claiming that it unfairly restricted the entry of their bananas to the EU.10 Eventually this led to the US creating sanctions against EU products which further damaged local markets in the southern hemisphere. The price of bananas dropped, and southern nations were receiving a lower percentage of the value of their work then anytime before. This led to major economic breakdowns, and most workers were unable to support their families. Thankfully, while the EU was able to take advantage of the banana industry for many years, the establishment of international systems such as the WTO has begun to eradicate such problems and has led to a better relationship between producers and buyers. This being said, the banana industry is still very far off from an entirely â€Å"fair trade† market system, with only one in four bananas sold being fair-trade.11 Banana transportation has been significantly aided by the creation of refrigerated cargo ships, ventilated boxes and cross-country railways, as these technological advances create nationwide networks that furthered the process of globalization. Globalization has created such change in the world that some argue that the nation-state is non-existent now because all corners of the world are interconnected. The introduction of containerization was crucial in the banana market but also in the entire world trade and currently 90% of world trade merchandise moves through containers. 12 Consumption With billions of bananas being consumed each year, bananas have become the most eaten fruit in the world.13 In addition to improvements in transportation, handling, and storage of bananas, advertising has had a great deal to do with modern food choices.14 The western consumption of bananas has been popular for over a hundred years ever since the banana was first brought to the Americas in the 1870’s. Bananas began as a luxury item and then grew in popularity amongst the developed nations. They have since gained influence in the realm of food and culture. Through the development of the banana commodity chain the banana has gained significant unbeatable popularity in Western culture – from Booster Juice to Curious George, it has influenced all ages. Recently, the industry has begun to use bananas for  more than eating. For example, EcoPaper has begun to use them in the production of paper. According to their website, 10 million tonnes of waste from the banana industry is used in the making of their paper. This recycling is extremely environmentally friendly, by cutting waste, saving energy, protecting natural resources and reducing pollution. 15 These types of advances are incredibly important in our globalizing world because they create the solutions that will help to work towards slowing our creation of waste and protect our environment for generations to come. Conclusion From the time the banana is cultivated, to the time that it is consumed, it travels through many walks of life and is able tell the story of the south. Multinational companies realized the potential of this fruit hundreds of years ago and this has caused a trickle down effect in the economy. The banana commodity chain highlights the need for customers to realize that their consumption does insurmountably affect others lives. This defetishization is important to geographers for many reasons, but importantly because it connects the producer with the consumer for all products.
